Each year the Golden Gate Stereoscopic Society selects subjects for our Special Division slideshows. Anything goes at our Open Division slideshows, while our Specials give the challenge of shooting within the confines of a specific subject or technique.
January 2025 | Double Open | Our traditional month of two Open Division slideshows |
February 2025 | Through the window (Negative Parallax) | Parallax defines where objects appear in 3-D space, with positive parallax placing objects “behind” the screen. Compose a stereo photo that utilizes negative parallax to reach out and grab you |
March 2025 | Rivalry | Each eye is presented with a different image in stereo photography, and discrepancies between the two photos in a stereo pair cause the visual disturbance “retinal rivalry.” Take advantage of intentionally out-of-sync elements in a stereo photo creatively |
April 2025 | Mergers (aka Interference) | Exploit stereo photography’s ability to separate objects in z-space. For example, imagine a photo of a thicket of trees; only in stereo will that photo reveal each individual tree rather than a mess of branches |
May 2025 | Hyperstereo | Exaggerate depth with a wide distance between cameras or exposures. Find a suitably distant subject to keep the parallax comfortable to view |
June 2025 | Hypostereo | A short stereo base less than the average interocular distance (the distance between eyes is about 65mm) is defined as hypostereo. Use a narrow base to photograph subjects up-close, or incorporate a macro lens for stereo macro photography |
July 2025 | Pseudo | A unique ability of a stereo pair is to show the subject “inside out” by swapping the left and right images when viewed. Explore intentional pseudostereo images for a creative effect |
August 2025 | False Frames | Create a mask or frame that compliments a stereo photo, and set it in space creatively |
September 2025 | Color | Highlight realistic color, or manipulate colors in a stereo photo creatively. “Color” covers a lack of color as well, including monochromatic and black & white stereo photos |
October 2025 | Creative | The Photographic Society of America’s definition of creative is “altered reality.” Anything goes! |
November 2025 | Action | Capture motion in stereo with your stereo camera or synchronized camera pair |
December 2025 | Scapes | Landscapes, seascapes, cityscapes – “scapes” are among the most popular subjects in international stereo exhibitions |
